Review of the MS Eurodam
Posted Tue, Nov 25th 2008, 07:03I recently had the opportunity to take a tour of the newest ship in the Holland America Line family. The MS Eurodam is the first in a line of ships called Signature Class. Right from the moment I stepped onboard I knew this ship was going to be something special. The decor is much more contemporary than other Holland America ships giving the Eurodam a chic and sophisticated feel throughout. The Eurodam also boasts an extensive display of art, in fact every corner has something new to explore. Staterooms are quite spacious from interior accommodations right up to the Penthouse Verandah Suites. Eurodam also has a selection of "Spa Suites" designed to relaxation, privacy and serenity. They feature special amenities and spa breakfasts and access to a spa concierge to book appointments. If you consider yourself a “foodie”, than you must visit the Culinary Arts Center. This state of the art demonstration kitchen offers interactive gourmet cooking lessons taught by HAL’s Master Chefs or culinary guests.
The Greenhouse Spa and Salon features an elegant Hydro Pool for a nominal charge ($150 per person per week) you can enjoy this retreat for the duration of your cruise.
There are several dining venues on the Eurodam. The 2 story Rembrandt Dining Room offers traditional early or late seating dining and HAL’s “As You Wish” open seating. The Lido Buffet offers a bright and clean décor and while walking through at the peak of lunch time, I found it to be more organized than on other ships. Canaletto, an Italian themed area of the Lido restaurant, includes a multi-course with table-side service at no extra cost. For specialty restaurants the Eurodam has Tamarind, offering Pan-Asian cuisine for lunch and dinner. The multi-course dinner has a modest fee of $15 per person for dinner and reservations are always required. The Pinnacle Grill is an intimate venue offering premium Sterling Silver beef, seafood dished and many select wines all served on Bvlgari® china, Riedel® stemware and Frette® linens. The charge for dining is $30 per person for dinner and $15 for lunch. If you’re in the mood for a great burger, look no further than Terrace Grill. Located on Lido Deck 9, this eatery serves fresh made to order burgers, fries and dogs in a casual atmosphere. Pizza anyone? Visit Slice pizzeria, ocated on Lido Deck Aft and order up a “slice” of your own or share a whole pie. And the best part… it’s open till 1:00am.
If you enjoy soaking up the sun visit the Lido Pool or if you’re looking for something extra special, book your own Cabana for the day. Located around the Lido Pool on the Observation Deck 11, The Retreat, provides pampering service and a private hideaway to relax in ultimate comfort. Enjoy amenities like specialty waters, fruits, chocolate-covered strawberries and a glass of champagne in the afternoon. Relax on woven chaise lounges, listen to the sounds of you own iPod preloaded with a selection of music, Evian spray misters, plush towels and bathrobes. The Retreat Cabanas are available for $45 on port days and $75 on sea days and can be booked for the entire cruise if you wish.
Eurodam also features the Club HAL program for kids and teens and includes a teens only space called The Loft. The Casino features table games like blackjack, roulette, Caribbean Stud Poker and over 100 slot machines. To keep you entertained the Mainstage Theater offers primetime acts such as comedians and singers to full production shows. The views from most seating is quite good and the seats are very comfortable. Fold-out trays or cocktail tables would have been a nice addition for drinks however.
I was very impressed by the Eurodam and all its unique features and modern design. I can definitely say that if you haven’t tried Holland America before and are planning a cruise to Europe, Canada/New England or the Caribbean, then you must keep the Eurodam in mind, you’ll be in for something great.
