Review of the Celebrity Solstice
Posted Wed, Mar 4th 2009, 13:30There was much publicity and anticipation regarding Celebrity Solstice. A ship with real grass and a glass blowing studio? As it turned out, that was only the beginning of the many surprises found onboard.
Many of the elements onboard this ship were inspired by a panel of women selected by Celebrity Cruises. I can personally say that I could see the thoughtfulness almost everywhere I turned. One thing for example, was the way adjoining rooms were connected through a vestibule in the hallway instead of a door on the interior of the room. Once closed, the outer vestibule is accessed with one main door opening to the two staterooms. This was a very ingenious use of space and provides more in the way of privacy and limits noise penetration between rooms.
Staterooms were spacious and the suites provided a lot of visual appeal and features. The bathrooms are also larger than you would expect. Another great feature were the trundle beds that pull out from beneath the sofa to acocomdate third guests. I also especially liked the outdoor whirlpool tub in the Royal Suite.
Many ships have solariums with pools; however, the one on the Solstice is the largest I have ever seen. The interior space is beautiful with water features, teak deck chairs and all enclosed in a glass dome. Here is another innovation… they put solar panels on the roof to convert the ample amount of sunlight to power some of the ships mechanical equipment.
Let’s get back to the grass and glass. The Lawn Club as it if officially known, is a very relaxing area of the ship. The perfectly manicured lawn is quite large and walking around barefoot is a real treat especially in the hot sun. The lawn serves as the backdrop for the Hot Glass Show. The real-live glass blowing studio offers demonstrations of this skillful art. There are plenty of seats under the covered canopy and scheduled shows are done throughout each cruise.
The specialty dining venues were so beautiful in their design and I really liked how they were all located within a central area. Blu is the dining venue for guests staying in AquaClass accommodations. The ambiance is modern and elegant with a sculpted white rose adorning the wall as you enter. Silk Harvest, a pan-Asian inspired restaurant, features a blend of Thai, Japanese, Vietnamese and Indian cuisines. Murano, also found on the Millennium class ships, offers elegant French cuisine with tableside service. Tuscan Grille offers authentic Italian dining with a twist. The interior was designed to resemble a Napa Valley wine cellar, as you enter through an arched oak barrel corridor.
The Grand Epernay is the Solstice’s main dining room. The centerpiece of this chic and modern space is a two story glass-enclosed wine tower.
The Solstice has 3 swimming pools - - the Sports Pool, Family Pool and the Solarium Pool. The Sports and Family pools are located on the Resort Deck. On either side of the pool area are A-Frame canopies with cantilevered awnings which provide shade for chaise lounges on both the pool deck and the Lido Deck above.
The Celebrity Solstice is a reflection of imagination and style and thoughtful touches throughout. Itineraries include Caribbean, Trans-Atlantic and Mediterranean. Check out our microsite on the Celebrity Solstice.
